NUTRITION & HYDRATION TIPS

Are you getting enough Vitamin D?

As we head into the winter months (northern hemisphere at least), the days get shorter, colder, and we often spend less time outdoors. This can lead to Vitamin D deficiency leaving you fatigued and possibly β€˜moody’ (or even depressed). There are many physiological impacts to a deficiency as well. In the article I was reading, 37% of Canadian, 24% of USA, and 40% of European populations are deficient in Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and essential for human health. We get his through diet (in our food), exposure to ultraviolet light (UV from sunlight), or through supplementation.

Due to the angle of the sun during the winter months, daylight hours can be shorter, taking activities indoors, we can become deficient in Vitamin D3 that can be corrected through supplementation. Consult your physician or pharmacist in your area however here in Alberta, it is recommended for me to take between 1000 IU and 2000 IU daily as a healthy individual.

TRAINING & FITNESS TIPS

I talked about this last month and felt it worth including again this month. You are much more than just an athlete training for a specific event, and that matters to me as your coach. I believe you should have a team in your corner such as your family physician, massage therapist, chiropractor, possibly a physio therapist, and of course, me your coach. This team should be willing to work together when required to best benefit you the athlete. You may have seen this posted on social media in October. I utilize this time of year to get a 'tune up' on me, what I mean by this is it is a great time to see my family physician. I get a complete physical and some blood work done to identify anything that might be slipping, new, or confirm what I'm doing. Others I like to see on a regular monthly basis is the massage therapist and chiropractor. Also with a little less weekly volume I'm able to spend some quality time with the family. If you haven't put much thought into it, take advantage of the off season to build or strengthen your Circle of Success for 2025.
